Calibration of the AIRS microwave instruments

چکیده

Aqua carries three microwave radiometers that form an integral part of the Atmospheric Infrared Souding (AIRS) sounding suite. Two Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A modules, one operating with two channels in the 23–31-GHz range and one operating with 12 channels in the 50–60-GHz range and one channel at 89 GHz, provide all-weather temperature soundings and cloud information. The Humidity Sounder for Brazil operates with four channels in the 150–190-GHz range and provides all-weather humidity and cloud soundings. All are crosstrack scanners, as is AIRS. While there are significant differences between these three instruments, they are sufficiently alike that a common approach can be used to calibrate them. We describe the instruments and their heritage, the onboard calibration system, and the ground-based calibration processing.

Using AIRS and IASI data to evaluate absolute radiometric accuracy and stability for climate applications

The creation of multi-decadal data sets for climate research requires better than 100 mK absolute calibration accuracy for the full range of spectral temperatures encountered under global conditions. Validation that this accuracy is achieved by the operational hyperspectral sounders from polar orbit is facilitated by comparing data from two instruments. Extreme radiometric calibration stability...

Two-port microwave calibration at millikelvin temperatures.

In this work we introduce a system for 2-port microwave calibration at millikelvin temperatures operating at the coldest stage of a dilution refrigerator by use of an adapted thru-reflect-line algorithm. We show that this can be an effective tool for characterizing common 50 Ω microwave components with better than 0.1 dB accuracy at temperatures that are relevant to many current experiments in ...

Broadband microwave spectroscopy in Corbino geometry at 3He temperatures.

A broadband microwave spectrometer has been constructed to determine the complex conductivity of thin metal films at frequencies from 45 MHz to 20 GHz working in the temperature range from 0.45 K to 2 K (in a (3)He cryostat). The setup follows the Corbino approach: a vector network analyzer measures the complex reflection coefficient of a microwave signal hitting the sample as termination of a ...

Estimating sampling biases andmeasurement uncertainties of AIRS/AMSU-A temperature and water vapor observations using MERRA reanalysis

We use MERRA (Modern Era Retrospective-Analysis for Research Applications) temperature and water vapor data to estimate the sampling biases of climatologies derived from the AIRS/AMSU-A (Atmospheric Infrared Sounder/Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A) suite of instruments. We separate the total sampling bias into temporal and instrumental components. The temporal component is caused by the AIRS...

In situ broadband cryogenic calibration for two-port superconducting microwave resonators.

We introduce an improved microwave calibration method for use in a cryogenic environment, based on a traditional three-standard calibration, the Thru-Reflect-Line (TRL) calibration. The modified calibration method takes advantage of additional information from multiple measurements of an ensemble of realizations of a superconducting resonator, as a new pseudo-Open standard, to correct errors in...
